Sunken Cages
Drummer, Electronic music producer
Sunken Cages is the moniker of Ravish Momin, an Indian-born drummer and electronic music producer residing in New York City. His unique approach quickly led him to work with a diverse cast of musicians ranging from legendary avant-saxophonist Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (of the AACM) to pop-star Shakira. In the past, he led the Global/Jazz band Tarana whose line-ups had included violinist Jason Kao Hwang, Trina Basu, and many others. Tarana performed on international stages for 14 years and recorded several albums to critical acclaim.
Momin currently leads Turning Jewels Into Water with Haitian electronic music pioneer Val Jeanty. Momin is the recipient of grants/commissions from New Music USA, Meet The Composer, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, US Artists International, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
Migiwa "Miggy" Miyajima
Pianist, Composer, Producer
Hailing from Japan, composer, producer, pianist, and bandleader of the 17-piece Miggy Augmented Orchestra, Migiwa “Miggy” Miyajima creates large-scale works manifesting her distinct life experiences. Birdland Jazz Club says, “Miyajima’s music reflects her journey as a musician and humanitarian.”
Formerly editor-in-chief of a magazine in Japan, Miyajima trusted the power of music and became a full-time musician at the age of 30. In four years, the Grammy-winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra found her and brought her two Grammy nominations as its associate producer.
After surviving the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, Miyajima received a Japanese government grant and a Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Fellowship, and relocated to the US. She is the recipient of grants and awards including the 2019 Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship, 2020 NYC Women’s Fund for Media, Music and Theatre, and 2021 Creative Engagement program of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
Ishita Mili
Dancer
Ishita Mili is an Indo-American choreographer based in New Jersey. At 5, she began training in Bharatanatyam Dance under Smt. Sudha Devulapalli Shekar and Indian contemporary dance under her uncle Sukalyann Bhattacharya.
She won various awards throughout her childhood as a soloist. Ishita soon decided to break out of Indian dance and joined UFP Hip Hop Dance Company.
Currently, she is a disciple of Mayurbhanj Chhau Dance master, Sri Rakesh Sai Babu. After training in a variety of styles, in 2017, Ishita founded IMGE as a performance company based in dance, film, and music that uses her cultural roots to share global stories. IMGE has since been featured at Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (India), New Victory Theater (New York), Seattle International Dance Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors (New York), and has been featured in Dance Informa and Pulse Magazine UK.
Freddie Hendrix
Trumpet, Flugelhorn
Over the past two decades, Freddie Hendrix has become one of the most in demand trumpeters in Jazz, and beyond. Also an accomplished composer, arranger and educator, the Teaneck, New Jersey native's skill and versatility has resulted in him working with a wide array of performers that range from the Count Basie Orchestra and The Christian McBride Big Band, to Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.
With the release of his first recording as a leader, JERSEY CAT, Freddie is serving notice that now is his time. One of the music's most exciting players, Hendrix has forged his own sure-footed, full toned sound, out of the tradition of Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Lee Morgan, and Clifford Brown.
A product of the esteemed Jazz program at William Paterson University, with a Masters in Jazz Studies and Performance from New Jersey City University, Hendrix also shares his knowledge and passion for the music by serving as a faculty member at the Hartt School of Music at The University of Hartford (Ct.), The New School in New York, and Jazz House Kids, in Montclair, New Jersey.
Steve Wilson
Sax, Flute
Saxophonist and flautist Steve Wilson has brought his distinctive sound to more than 150 recordings and ensembles led by such celebrated artists as Chick Corea, Ron Carter, George Duke, Dave Holland, Michael Brecker, Dianne Reeves, Bill Bruford, Gerald Wilson, Joe Henderson, and Charlie Byrd among many others.
Since his arrival in New York in 1987 Wilson emerged as a first-call choice for veteran and emerging artists alike. He is regularly cited in the Downbeat Magazine Critics and Readers Polls in the soprano and alto saxophone, and flute categories. Wilson is currently a touring member of Grammy-winning ensembles led by Christian McBride, Maria Schneider, Billy Childs, and Buster Williams. His work in film includes being artistic consultant to Harvey Keitel for "Lulu On The Bridge”.
With nine recordings under his name Wilson leads two acclaimed quartets – Wilsonian’s Grain and The Analog Band. He is one-half of two dynamic duos – with drummer Lewis Nash as heard on their recording “Duologue”, and also with pianist Bruce Barth as heard on their recording “Home”.
Wilson is Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at City College of New York, and co-director of the Ravinia Steans Music Institute Program for Jazz. Much in-demand as a clinician, he has been a visiting artist at institutions throughout the world.
